Right now I have a 1999 3.0 with a 5 spd manual, and a 7.5 rear end with 3.73s, 4x4. Spun rod bearing and I'm done with this stupid motor. I found a 98 4.0 ohv with 153k that comes with everything for $300 (the guy drops 5.0s in these rangers he said so it seems legit). I found a 5 speed manual for a 4.0 ohv from 98 for $450. My questions are:
1) can ford reprogram my 3.0s computer to the 4.0s so I don't have to deal with pats?
2)if they can't, I found on rockauto it's $115 for the ecu, what do I have to do when dealing with the pats?
3) do I have to change the wiring harness?
4) how long will my 7.5 hold up?
5) what other issues will I run into? Will the tcase bolt up to the 4.0s tranny? Will the driveshaft need to be changed?
6) is the battery group the same? My interstate battery is good so I don't wanna deal with changing that!
7) if I need to change the wiring harness, will a 4.0 auto wiring harness plug into the 5 speeds ecu? The autos are a dime a dozen compared to the 5 speed.
8) what about fuel system? Will the fuel line click into the 4.0s fuel rail? Fuel pressure the same?
9) any other issues?

Thank you very much!!
Chris

No

Must be programmed, kinda complicated.

3) do I have to change the wiring harness?

Yes

4) how long will my 7.5 hold up?

How long do you want it to?

5) what other issues will I run into? Will the tcase bolt up to the 4.0s tranny? Will the driveshaft need to be changed?

Every swap is different. Yes. No.

6) is the battery group the same? My interstate battery is good so I don't wanna deal with changing that!

Should be good enough.

7) if I need to change the wiring harness, will a 4.0 auto wiring harness plug into the 5 speeds ecu? The autos are a dime a dozen compared to the 5 speed.

Sure. Minor modifications will be required.

8) what about fuel system? Will the fuel line click into the 4.0s fuel rail? Fuel pressure the same?

It carries fuel. Probably not. Yes.

9) any other issues?
Try it and find out.

This swap seems silly to me. You're going to spend a bunch of money, and do lots of work, just to swap in a motor with 153k that has about 10hp and 35-40lb ft more than you existing engine?

For the money you'll spend swapping all of the parts, you could have a healthy rebuilt 3.0 that will go 200,000 miles, and avoid all of the headaches that come with a swap. Trust me, there will be headaches. You could probably even do a lot to help the 3.0 free up hp to make up a good bit of the difference with the old 4.0 OHV.

If you're bound and determined to do a swap, why not get an engine that will be significantly better than the 3.0? A 4.0 SOHC or 5.0 would be the same amount of work to swap, and provide better increases in hp and tq. Why spend the money, and do all of that work for minimal gains?

Because it's a big difference not on paper but in reality it is. I've driven both and the power difference is night and day. I just rebuilt my 3.0 10k ago and it spun a rod bearing, hasn't been reliable for me. It's the worst idling engine and makes me go insane.

Will a 4.0 sohc bolt up to a 4.0 ohv manual tranny?

Hey I noticed after research that the 4.0 and 3.0 both use the m5od-r1 manual tranny. Will my manual tranny from my 3.0 bolt up to the 4.0? If not can I change the bell housing? Or is it integrated into each m5od-r1?

And also do they sale an adapter plate if the bell housing is different?

The 3.0 bell housing and 4.0 bell housing are different. I've never seen an adaptor plate. I believe the 3.0 bell housing is integrated. Not sure about the 4.0, but it doesn't really matter if you can't get the 3.0 trans/bell housing apart.

I believe the 4.0 OHV and SOHC bell housings are the same, or at least close enough to work.

Alright cool well for now I'm gonna stick with getting the 4.0 ohv and that manual tranny, then someday upgrade to a 4.0 ohc. Or by that time a 302 :D

Got the engine with all the components.. Like literally everything but the maf sensor and the starter for $300-even came with the ecu! Got 153k but got leaks, but that's okay I was going to replace them gaskets anyways. Oil is used and there's no shavings on the dipstick, so I knew no bearings had spun. turned the engine by hand and it was about as hard to turn as my 3.0, so compression seems fine. Could hear the exhaust ventilating and all so seems good. Bought it from an old guy who buys rangers to do 5.0 swaps.

Got an m5od from a transmission shop for the 4.0. Has 70k on it and I'm telling ya those gears in there are immaculate. Engages really solidly and the dude even put metal plugs in place of the rubber ones that crack out. Got that for $450.

Now all I need is the starter, maf, flywheel, clutch, and slave cylinder. And the gaskets..
Can I get away with replacing the head gasket without having the head or block milled or should I just leave it be? Also does my 3.0s y-pipe bolt to the exhaust manifold on the 4.0?
Does my throttle cable hook up? I see it's on the other side of the throttle body.

Thanks!
