I'm planning to swap a 98 3.0 for 97 2.3 that has been turboed. I'm pretty well versed in the turbo swap but was wondering what the difficulties would be in swapping the 3.0 to 2.3. I'll be using a harness from a 97 2.3, any repinning need to be done? Also if i get the 2.3 mounts for a 98 will they bolt right in? Any other concerns? I also have a computer from the 97.

Is the 98 3.0 a returnless fuel system?

I am concerned about how the '97 was turboed. What computer does it have?

As for motor mounts, they may be different (I've never dealt with a 3.0L), but if you get ones for the 2.3L, then they will bolt in place of the 3.0L mounts.

You will also have to get a different transmission. A 3.0L and 2.3L have entirely different bellhousing bolt patterns.

Again, with the 3.0L, I know practically nothing, so I can't help you with the returnless fuel question.

I also forgot to mention that you put this in the wrong forum to get answers. There is a forum specifically made for turbo engine swaps titled "Forced Induction".

Do some searching around there and then see if your questions (and mine) make more sense and get answered.

I found when we swapped from the 2.3 to a 4.0 in our 1990 Ranger, the crossmember was already drilled for both. And it seems the 4.0/3.0/2.9 use same or similar mounts anyway. Certainly, I'm curious about how the 2.3 was turbocharged and what computer. Was the motor built up for the turbo, or is it all stock with a turbo slapped on?

I have done alot of planning for this already, i had a 97 regular cab with a 2.3 that i was originally doing the swap into but came accross a very nice 3.0 98 extended cab for 1000 bucks because it had a rod knocking so i sold mine and bought it. The block is from a 97, picking it up from the machine shop this week. Turbocoupe rods and custom cp pistons are going in along with new crank and arp bolts/studs. Ive already customized a volvo head and built custom intake and exhaust manifolds. I've got a 97 wiring harness and computer. Already picked up a 2.3 transmission and everything to swap to manual from auto. Figured out how to modify to a return style sending unit. Got the brackets from a 2.5 that go between motor mounts and engine block becasue they are different from 97. The list goes on but i have most everything i need and figured that stuff out since i posted early last month.

From what you have done so far, you don't seem to need any more help...

Haha yah well i did have a few questions a month ago but figured it out

Depending on high you set the boost/PSI, you might need AWD xfer case and axles from an Explorer, just to keep all that power to the ground, lol... :icon_welder:

I have engine-envy... post pics... help a 3.0L bro out... :D
