I have a 1991 Ranger XLT 3.0. 244,000 miles.Within the last two weeks, I started having idle issues & erratic rpms at lower speeds. The idle would waiver above & below 1000 rpm. As I reached higher speeds, it would go away. I replaced the plugs, cap, rotor, air filter & fuel filter to be safe. Also, with the fuel line off, the fuel flow appeared to be adequate. Then, going down the highway, the engine started losing power & caused the truck to start "bucking". I pulled over & could barely keep it running. If i pushed on the gas it would sputter & almost die. I got a tow to the house. I used my code scanner & got #14 & #18. #14 - ECA has detected an intermittent loss of PIP signal during recent operation. *18 - loss of TACH signal to ECA. I replaced the Electronic ignition module, no change. I replaced the coil, coil connector(a pin wouldn't stay in) & plug wires, still no change. I've also pulled out the spout shorting bar plug & it didn't have any effect. The engine is still idling very rough, & sputters if I give it gas. I will check my timing, but, I'm beginning to think my distributor has gone bad. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,

On a TFI 3.0 the PIP signal comes from the 'stator' inside the distributor. Check the connector that comes off the distributor. Look for any loose pins or a broken connector. Other than that if it all checks out, just look for the same on the PCM connector. I assume you already checked the ICM connector.......

You could take it a step further and actually use a DMM to check continuity and resistance in the wires between the pins. This will make sure they are shorted out or open.

My only other 'guess' would be the "pickup" in the distributor is damaged, dirty, or going out. A new distributor will come with a new one. A new one would set you back $90.

This guy will set you back $50 for a GOOD one. But will require you taking the distributor out and tinkering with it.......

I have not gone inside the cab to look at the PCM connector, yet. I did visually check the ICM plug when I replaced it. It appeared ok. I do have a digital multimeter & actually printed out the TFI - worksheet EEC-IV Systems - Typical. I'll try that after I check the connector on the distributor. I can tell you that the the inside of the distributor is very rusted. I did spray contact cleaner in it, but, obviously no help. If it is the stator or pick up, I will just replace the distributor. That's the only "bolt-on" item I haven't replaced since I bought it new . Oh, for what it's worth regarding the coil connector/pigtail. Auto Zone doesn't carry it.Advance Auto has to order it from BW (7-8 business days), Dealer would take the next business day at 40.00. O"reilly's had in stock for 18.00. I will let you know how this progresses. Thank you for your input.

Fixed!

To make a long story short, it was the distributor. I replaced the distributor & set the timing & she runs just fine. Actually, she now has a little pep in her step. I admit I've never checked or adjusted my timing since the day I bought her until now(245,000 miles later). I'm thankful that the distributor hold down bolt wasn't the special one requiring a dealer only tool. Thanks for your input.
