I need help diagnosing my 97 3.0 xlt ranger, everytime i go to start it, it cranks but wont start, but when i cycle the key about 3-4 times in 2 second intervals it fires right up?
I have already put new crank and cam sensors in it and a new fuel pump in it.
Anything helps thanks in advance

Have you plugged in an OBD2 scanner and checked for codes? It really does seem like a cam/crank sensor problem at first glance. And as is getting to be common advice around here and from experts everywhere, never assume a new part is a good part anymore.

Did the symptoms change at all from before you installed the new parts to after?

What I was trying to ask was if the parts you installed helped or made no difference. It sounds to me like you're saying they made things worse, but then I'm confused as to why you would have installed those parts if it was fine before.
Maybe you could clarify when the symptoms started and what order you did things in?

Ok so a couple months ago I was having idling issues and a hard thumping issue as if the transmission was shifting hard, but it shifts fine and it would thump crusing in 5th gear, so I knew it wasn't the transmission. So then a buddy told me that It was the cam sensor so I changed it and it fixed the problem. Then recently the fuel pump when out kinda strangely by the way that it would kill the vehicle and then start just gine a couple hours later so I changed both crank sensor and fuel pump at the same time and that problem was solved I guess I can say the problem really started when I was changing the valve cover gaskets and didn't disconnect the battery and the alternator power wire grounded out, but I didn't think much of it cause I checked the fuse and it wasn't blown

Doesnt the 3.0 have a shrader valve on the fuel rail?
Turn key on, hit shredder with small screw driver & see if you have any fuel pressure at all, also have someone crank engine while doing so....
Can you here fuel pump hum at the tank when you cycle the key???
Have you checked for spark at the plugs?

Reading back through everything, it really does sound like it might be fuel pressure related. As slater50 suggested, probably best to verify fuel pressure first.
