I currently have a 2000 ranger 3.0 4x4 5 speed. The engine has gotten to where it doesn't have oil pressure at idle and is low on compression on one cylinder, so I'm looking for a new engine, 3.0's seem to be impossible to find around here.
I found a cheap, relatively low mileage wrecked B2500 5 speed truck, 2wd of course. I would like to swap a 4 cylinder in, as I am a big fan of the lima engines, but want to keep my 4wd. Can I just use the tail shaft and housing out of my 3.0 trans in the 2.5's trans so that I can keep 4wd? I have heard of swapping the 4x4 tail off other 4 cyl. transmissions to make this work, but wasn't sure if the 3.0's M5OD was the same as the 4 cylinder trans (apart from the bell housing of course)
I would like a 5.0 in the truck too, but I'm not going to swap in an auto so unless I can relatively easily get it to work with a 5 speed that's a no go.
