3.0 M5OD question

I currently have a 2000 ranger 3.0 4x4 5 speed. The engine has gotten to where it doesn't have oil pressure at idle and is low on compression on one cylinder, so I'm looking for a new engine, 3.0's seem to be impossible to find around here.

I found a cheap, relatively low mileage wrecked B2500 5 speed truck, 2wd of course. I would like to swap a 4 cylinder in, as I am a big fan of the lima engines, but want to keep my 4wd. Can I just use the tail shaft and housing out of my 3.0 trans in the 2.5's trans so that I can keep 4wd? I have heard of swapping the 4x4 tail off other 4 cyl. transmissions to make this work, but wasn't sure if the 3.0's M5OD was the same as the 4 cylinder trans (apart from the bell housing of course)

I would like a 5.0 in the truck too, but I'm not going to swap in an auto so unless I can relatively easily get it to work with a 5 speed that's a no go.

IIRC it should work.

Get a 5.0 from an Exploder and a M5OD-R2 from a 97+ 4.2L F150 and you'll be good to go. Prepare for a huge migraine from the PATS, though.

Both M50D-R1, then it should just swap over, the tail shaft

What year is the 2.5l?
I believe in the '98 model year the fuel systems were changed to higher pressure, 65psi, returnless systems.

The donor truck would be a '98

Should be just be an engine, computer and wiring swap then

IIRC the 2.5 was the engine with 2 spark plugs per cylinder, highly recommend changing those plugs out before dropping the donor engine in, they can be a pain.

The 4x4 tail housing and shaft can be swapped. It requires total disassembly of both trannies and a shim kit.

I recommend getting parts through Cobratransmission.com

They use OEM brand bearings and have awesome customer service.

Plum you beat me to it. To reitterate you CANNOT just swap the tail shaft housing from a 4wd to a 2wd and expect it to work. The 2wd main shaft is longer so you will need to disassemble both transmissions and swap the shafts.
