3.0 m5 internals in a 4.0 m5od

I've read plums build. I've read that section of his build a few times. Plum used a 2wd transmission. So the tail was different.so he swappes the gears onto his 4x4 shaft. If I get a 3.0 4x4 m5od can I just swap that tail shaft in without removing the gears?

If you are looking to replace a 4.0 m5od with a 3.0 m5od the bellhousings are not the same and the starters are not the same. I EMT through this on my 96 four times. I had to swap the guts from the 3.0 l into the one for the 4.0 l. not too hard to do but but you should get some shims to set the end play on the main shaft back to within spec and don't forget to replace the countershaft bearings. They kept going bad in several of my tranny's.

If the donor trans is 4x4, then its a straight forward swap. I have done a few of them that way, but you will still need a shim kit for the main shaft. And I would recommend snychro and bearing replacement while you are in there...especially the pocket bearing.
