Anyone heard about any sort of recalls on 3.0 heads? #6 was misfiring because of burned out valves. A friend of mine has an 05 Ranger with 71K and just had the same issue. While doing research on the net I ran into this in numerous forums. Cost $2500 to replace with new head(under warranty thank god) on both sides. Hardened valve seats needed????? 3.0 sucks

my 3.0 died at 278600 miles w/ no head issues idk what happened there unless they leaned them out too much at the factory or you have an exhaust/intake leak from poor gaskets. 3.0s can take a beating, i would know mines been thru hell buddy, something was wrong at the factory i can tell you that much.

There is nothing wrong with the 3.0, it is of course not a speed demon but proves to be very reliable if handled, cared, and driven well. I think 20XX is right with the factory problem.

well lets just say when my dad had it for 100000 miles and all he did was starters and oil changes, then i inherited the rest of the stuff that i later did as follows: 2 thermostats, 2 serpentine belts (one when i removed the a/c) a/c removal, custom intake, multiple exhaust combinations, several heater hoses and one water pump later...the oil pump went and ran on 3 cylinders 6 miles to the house. the original coolant wasnt changed til almost 200000 miles, the tranny fluid was changed and the water pump at the same time w/ the first thermostat and all the water hoses. at 170000 miles the truck pulled 2 loads of 8000 lbs hence the reason the bumper brackets bent down, heated and bent back, then bent down again. that motor took a lickin and kept on tickin, but never once was the oil change overdue, it did use a qt every 1000 miles since 212000 miles tho. cold weather killed 7 batteries and oil dripped on the starter when changing the filter so she went thru 9 starters. what still beats me tho is the 16 yr old factory alternator still puts out 14.50-15.50 volts. and didnt change the distributor cap rotor and coil til 272000, numerous plug changes tho. theres a testament to built ford tough if you ask me.

this is the first ive heard of 3.0's burning valves at that low of mileage (or at all for that matter). the valve seats are already hardened (any engine designed to run on unleaded fuel has hardeneed valve seats). sorry for your misfortune, but it wasnt the fault of the engines design.

Head issue

I posted a new thread on the info I found on 2000+ 3.0's. Dealer and Ford said that they revamped the heads with hardened seats and beefed up valves. Why the problem on 2000+ heads i dont know. I speculate money savings on a redesign. also, i paid $2500 for both heads. It was $1000 for labor and I think the heads were about $400 a piece. I could have done it myself i suppose but it was under warranty. I maintain my truck religiously but I also drive it like a truck ie towing and off roading.

Factory seats are induction hardened, induction hardening only hardens a couple thousanths deep, we replace all factory seats with seats hardened all the way through.
