You can't, and at 300 miles being from a Taurus wouldn't be the problem, or even 3,000 miles.
Only difference, assuming years were close, is that the Taurus has a slightly different coolant flow pattern thru the engine.
Taurus 3.0l was transverse mounted so coolant flowed in the back and out the front
Ranger coolant flows in the front to the back then to the front again and out
For this reason they used different hole patterns in the head gasket to direct the coolant flow differently.
With thermostat closed they both had basically the same flow pattern, just circulating coolant with water pump.
Only after thermostat opened was the pattern different, and not all that different
Many have put Taurus engines in Rangers and not changed head gaskets, they probably get hot spots but no over heating, and many miles logged
You may have just gotten a bad engine, used, I am assuming, is a gamble even if you have the history of an engine
