3.0 Compressor ?

Got in my truck this morning to go to work. Haven't drove it in about 5 days when I started it a loud knocking sound was coming from the compressor. After about a minute it quit knocking. But I noticed it wouldn't kicking on and off any either. So I drove it to work and the whole time it wouldn't working. So I get in it after work and now its working like it always has. What could have happened any ideas? This is a one owner truck bought new 2002 model 3.0 thanks
