3.0 blown up

i blew up my 3.0 in my 97 ranger and i cant seem to find a replacement. the wreaking yards have tons of taurus 3.0 but they say the arent a direct fit. what needs to be changed to make the 3.0 fit?
 
The Taurus 3.0 is a Front-Wheel Drive engine, its not designed for RWD applications. You'd have a nightmare of a time trying to bolt the 3.0 from a Taurus to the RWD Trans in your Ranger.

Dont try removing the Trans from your Ranger and dropping in the one from the Taurus, either. Its a transaxle setup (FWD) and its not compatible. Not to mention I've never heard of anyone modifying a FWD trans to run a RWD setup.

There would also likely be wiring nightmares, as I'm pretty sure the wiring for the motors is vastly different. At least, I'd assume it to be.

The 3.0 in Rangers is not the same 3.0 Ford uses in most other vehicles. Internally speaking, yes I think they're the same motor, but I think thats where the similarities end.

EDIT: After doing a little poking around, the 3.0 from a Taurus should be a near-direct swap....The only thing I'd wonder about is the Transmission bolt pattern. Theres some pointers in there about nessecary modifications and such.

3.0 Ford motors all use the same block. The main difference between the two are the head gaskets and the lower plenum. The Taurus cam seams to be different too, I don't like it in my '87 Ranger.
 
Earl, I edited my post later after running off to research the swap. I added a link to the thread that contains the swap info. Read the whole thing next time please.
 
my connecting rod went thru the pan and block

to use a tauras engine i would have to

buy truck oil pan
change head gaskets to use truck gaskets
buy complete gasket kit
buy head bolts
use truck intake
change cam to truck cam

if the 02-03 had more compression would i be better off using that?
 
i am in ontario canada just north of toronto. if only you were closer...

The Basic engine (block heads etc) are the same.

what is most obviously different is the intake and exhaust manifolds,
but most importantly the coolant flow through the engine is different
FWD to RWD.

Some people will say it's "Reversed" and that isn't exactly the truth.

In either case the water pump sucks "cold" coolant from the radiator and pressurizes the block, what's different is how the coolant is allowed to frlow from the lock into the heads and eventually into the intake manifold to the thermostat, and that's where the difference lies.

On the FWD engine the t-stat is at the bellhousing end of the lower intake manifold, on the RWD engine it's obviously at the water pump end of the engine.

what is actually different are the head gaskets.

FWD head gaskets are marked "car" while the RWD head gaskets are marked "TRK" or "TRUCK" .

So you'd have to take the heads off and replace the head gaskets (and head bolts) while swapping over EVERYTHING from your engine onto the taurus engine.

If you can get a taurus engine cheap enough it might be worth it.

But what is a lot easier is converting an aerostar engine
That's just swapping over accessory brackets and exhaust manifolds.
