Howdy, I am currently doing a 4.0 swap on my 3.0 1998 Ford Ranger 4x4. I had bought a donor truck that had everything needed to complete the swap ( Engine, Transmission, transfer case, wiring harness, and ECM). The donor truck is '94. The socket to firewall is different from my '98 and was trying to see if there is anyone that has used a wiring harness from an older ranger in a newer one, or to see how much i have to change out of both harnesses to make a solid harness for the 94 motor and the 98 wiring. Any help is much appreciated.

In this case, I would either try to find a 98 4.0 engine harness, or try to make the 3.0 engine harness fit the 4.0. They are both V6 engines and the sensors (except MAF) should be the same for a given year.

The only other thing that would be different is the injectors but the connectors (injectors and MAF) should be the same.

you have eec5 and eec4 systems.

you need to stand alone the eec4 4.0 setup and interface it as required at the least..

98 is a crossover potential for fuel systems ect.....

the easier way plug in wise is to dress the 94 as a 98 and use a 98 4.0 harness but the heads are different and timing ect will need tuned.

welcome to 4.0 hell.

Trying to put a 94 ODB I engine/Transmission/ECM into a 98 ODB II truck is going to be a wiring nightmare.

Your truck currently has a 104 pin ECM, the 94 has a 60 pin ECM

for sure...if you want plug and play and ease of serviceability a 98 system swap complete is what is needed.

just depends on what you are willing to live with and compromise on. post 96 the trucks start getting complicated in regards to systems and modules.... i have swapped big blocks into these chassis but threw everything away. custom dash and cruise control and fuel system. why would you want the factory garbage?

the eec4 and eec5 on the ecm side is not too bad going old to new.

running wise....its not that bad. in regards to the obd1. you just make it stand alone. it dont care where it is. it will just go and be happy... going the other way...you need a tuner unless you want to bring all of that evaporative crap with you...

as to the rest of the truck. warning lights and functionality can be affected.

on memory, potential issue is with speedo and its reporting ect with the abs system.... retaining cruise control and the potential fuel system setups.....that can get to be a pia. the evaporative emissions setups are painfully fun....late 97 into 98 you get pressure sensors.... the module families are livable still to this point. you can stand alone the transfer case shifter with the older systems as well.

may be as simple to use the 98 pressure and temp sensors and wiring if they are different and connector wise most certainly are to get by. most of the oil and temp stuff was the same in the rangers 88-98 functionally but connectors different. i have run into issues trying to get the tachometer to work as well. i do not remember specifically as it has been some years, but after 94 and then 97 there are tons of things that can present topics of thought to work through.

whereas in this case fitting the 98 4.0 dress to the system makes it all quite simple. i would strip it from a junkyard and plug it in....and get the 98 transmission and t case unless you are willing to live with some of the other issues.

yup. 4.0 hell.

is it worth it? if it runs good. i think so.

there is a reason i would rather do a 5.3 swap.....which now that the 03-04 engines are so old...thats not even worth it anymore..but you get similar economy and in some cases better and way more power.

I just put a 4.0l from a 99 XLT 4x4 4 door into a 2000 XLT 4x4 3.0 flex fuel. Required putting 99 dash into the 2000. Cab wiring was swapped. Only wiring not swapped was for the tail lights. A donor truck made it possible. There were several changes made between the 99 and 2000 models. Glad its done!

I appreciate all the advice. I unfortunately have to work with what I have. Wiring sucks but that's fine I have the wiring diagrams for both trucks now the issue now is the damn motor mount brackets are a shorter distance from the frame on the 4.0 compared to the 3.0 brackets. So it looks like I will be going through hell for a while to get it done.
