4x2 to 4x4 swap

I'm finding all kinds of info on Ranger 2 to 4 wheel conversion strategies, and I now know that there are more differences than I thought.(mainly the different crossmember for the front TTB) What I haven't found is if this applies to the later Bronco II's also. I have an '89 2wd Bronco II that uses the dummy case so the rear driveshaft is the same length as the 4wd. Are the Bronco II frames the same for 2/4wd or do they follow suit with Ranger frame styles?

the bronco IIs had the 4x4 crossmember with different configured 4x2 brackets to be that way should just be able to cut the rivets and put 4x4 brackets in place with axle and new tcase

Actually only the bracket for the passenger side beam is different between 2wd and 4x4.

The 4x4 bracket mounts behind pivot point behind the rear "flange"
of the engine crossmember
the 2wd bracket mounts to the sameholes but places the pivot
point INSIDE the crossmember.

so all you have to do is swap that one bracket and everything
else simply bolts right up.

COOL! I was afraid I was gonna have to start looking for another frame/parts car, but this is good news. Thanks for the tech, guys!

its not even that hard. if you want to make a 2x4 into a 4x4 just nail another one to it.

i did the 2x4 to 4x4 swap on a b2 and it was a one day job, i did it all myself with a floor jack. Everything bolts up.

:icon_rofl: OK but seriously you BII guys are so lucky when it comes to this conversion as it's much easier than the pickups are. :temper: Do it and post pics! BTW, it would be cool to do this with a BII and then put a standard cab and shortened short bed on the frame!!! :headbang:

Im surprised to took someone this long to say something. FOR FUTURE REFERENCE: A 2 wheel drive vehicle is not a 2x4, thats lumbar. A 2wd is a 4x2, sorry, i had to. It bugs me.

Actually its lumber. And if you want to make a 4x4, you could also glue it or nail it. :idiot:

Lumbar is part of your back. :icon_thumby:

Give me a brake. Its dark and its late at nite. So what if my speling is a littel bit off? I aint never had no good grammar anyhow. Plus, glue is way to messy, its much more fun to nail it. Wouldnt you agree?

Man, I don't think I'll ever be able to say 2x4 again:D Main reason I ask, the 2wd Bronco II is gonna get parted out/scrapped eventually. Frame is still in good shape. Behind the garage is a '48 CJ2A with a rotten frame and a billion miles on the driveline, but a woods worthy body. Just considering the BII frame/suspension w/modern driveline under the flattie body. Haven't seen this combo yet, if I get motivated enough I guess I'll have to move over to the "RBV morph" area.

Haha, Im just messin with you.

And yeah, glue is messy but sometimes it's too tight a fit to nail it. :woot:
