I want to use a manual transfer case in my 2wd dune truck I am building. I was looking at running a 331 with a c-4 and 3.55 gears so I can drive on the highway and use low range on the dunes with neutral for towing if necessary. Any recommendations on which case? Can I run a chain case without the chain since I wont be using a front drive shaft? Any help is appreciated.

I recommend a manual 1354. The M1350s had a front slip yoke that would need to be plugged to prevent the case from leaking. The M1354 has a fixed yoke. I also recommend a manual tcase because it will be easier to install than an electric case and dealing with making the electric shift work.

I'm (eventually) running a manual 1350 in mine. I just gasket goo-ed a 1.5" or so freeze plug on the end of the front output from the local Car Quest.

If I remember I'll get pics tomorrow.

I think it'll be fine without the chain, even still it won't hurt anything to leave it in, it's not like the front output is turning anything.

If you are using a 1354, defiantly go with a manual. Once you do get it, if you're leaving it a 2wd, split it and remove the chain. It won't be needed and only adds to the weight and moving parts. Leave the front shaft in to plug the hole though. Everything will work fine without the chain in place.

You could also check out the Shiftster to put on a electric case if they are more common/cheaper. I'm waiting to receive mine so I have no review on it yet, though it looks well thought out.

look at how people are building doublers. that way you don't have to worry about the front output at all.

btw, you know you will have crazy low gearing that way, right? should be able to run a set of tall fat paddles :icon_thumby:

Thanks for the help guys. I will definitely be using a manual shift. I have no luck with electrical anything.
