This reminds me of the first pole smoker who told me his open diffed POS would out wheel a comparable vehicle with 2 locked axles.

2 spinning (open diffs) spinning cant hold a candle stick to 4 tires spinning (duh locked) in off road ability or part breaking ability.

my truck was 2wd, to end all of this nonsense i will say that converting it to 4wd was the best thing i have ever done to it!

ive wheeled both.. and wheeling a 2wd drive is more excitement because you know you dont have a lever or button to make the other wheels pull.. but as far as which will go further a 4wd hands down

I'm not saying that 2wd is better than 4wd offroad, as anyone with half a brain knows it's not true. All things being equal, a bone-stock "2 wheel drive" (open diff 4x4) will out-wheel a similarly-equipped "1 wheel drive" truck. A locked RWD truck might be able to keep up with an open-diff 4x4, but nothing can compete with a well-equipped 4x4 with one or both axles locked.

I had mismatched gear ratios in my 4x4 for a while. I got really used to trail riding in 2. My truck at this point in time had IFS. So no flex in the front. Which didn't matter.

I was runnin an exploder 8.8" with disks and a LSD in the rear with extended shackles. I didn't get stuck wheeling CO's infamous and cliche Slaughter House. Having a bunch of girls, camping gear, and a cooler in the bed helped keep traction.

If I were building a 2wd trail truck I'd run some 63s in the rear with extended shackles, lincoln locked.

If I were building a 2wd dessert truck, full size van beams, coil overs, 63s in the rear, LSD in the rear.

It's all about what you do.

And who needs 4wd to get some lumber to the job site?

depends on what kinda wheeling your doing. if its trying to fly threw 3ft whoops at 60mph a 2x i beam truck is gonna do it way better then just about any 4x out there.

From what I have read it seem like this is a futile fight. The one thing that gets me is people saying they have never been stuck in a 4x2 or a 4x4 for that matter while wheelin. If you have never been stuck THEN YOU HAVE NEVER BEEN WHEELIN.

I have definitely been stuck in both. and ive never owned a 4x4. BUT I have owned a 2wd which has INDEED driven around a 4x4 chevy, offered to pull him out, and in an effort to retain some dignety, refused. In fact, that same day, i went on the same hill, and ripped around, did some climbs, but the snow makes it hard, and i went to fast down the hill. i ended up in about 15 inches of powder, in my 2wd, -1hp ranger 2.9, with open diff, on a slant, and massive engine problems, backin up with very little weight. BUT i Had my AMAZING BLIZZAK 14 inche tires, that drove out like a champ. for those wondering, these are incredible tires and i would definitly suggest them. they are fantastic. Much better in snow than, say, goodyear super sport street tires with -5% tread(which you could even get stuck, say, in the friggin middle of the street while tryin to turn around in the ruts made by the graders. Jerks..)
But ya, you should see the thing i drove in the 15" snow... theres a vid of it on youtube...

No. Its not that hard, at least on the older TTB b2s and explorers it isent.

As you noticed, Edges have the same suspension setup as the 4x4's. It is supposed to be pretty easy to convert them.

TTB Rangers require changing the engine crossmember along with the front axle/springs. Not a simple feat.

Ex's and BII's are different though, they just need the axle. Most BII's even have a 4x4 tranny from the factory with a dummy t-case.

Trust me I know. I have torn down d28 and d35 equipped vehicles plenty of times.

No problem. I am well read when it comes to RBVs. I also have spent a fair amount of time dealing with the torsion bar IFS setups. I have owned soon to be 4 RBVs 86 standard cab long bed, 92 extended cab short bed, 89 b2 and soon to be a 91 explorer 4 door.

At least you could weld a open diff with some confidence it wont fail, you cant even get that with your trash lock.

yea ive found the trak loc aint as good as i thought it was lol. im still learning the ropes with the rangers, but ill still have to say the ranger is the baddest light duty truck ever made.
