Work hard and play harder
Well since I have taken up hunting, I now need 4wd from time to time. I am doing nothing crazy here. Just want a good parts list to start. I know I need a 4wd 5.0 tranny.

Does the Explorer come with a manual transfer? If so, what model do I want to find?
Will I need a custom front drive shaft?
While I am doing this, would it be worth the time and effort to install a locker? The rear end has a L/S already.

Any good advice would be greatly appreciated.

if it's an edge it's pretty straight forward apparently as they have the torsion bars and such, same basic front suspension just without the differential. I'm not sure if the spindles are the same or not but this is one of the RBV 4x4 conversions that's doable in a reasonable amount of time

M5OD-R2 (97+ F150 4.2L trans has the best shifter location and will bolt up to the 5.0l.)

4406 F150/Expedition manual shift T-case is one of the more popular swaps for a true 4x4. Read up on it here, it will tell you all about the swap and what driveshaft to use.

As you stated "I now need 4wd from time to time. I am doing nothing crazy here." A front locker isnt needed.

I had a brilliant post typed up and THEN noticed you had a 5.0L.

I don't think Explorers ever had one, but the other fullsize trucks (that had 5.0's) did. I'm sure one of those would work if you got the parts from a similar transmission (or start with a 4x4 one like you mentioned).

You might need a custom driveshaft, but take measurements and check around, you might get lucky and be able to use one from another vehicle, if not an explorer one. Things are going to end up where they're going to end up, only way to really tell is once it's together (or if you're REALLY good).

Lockers are way handy, especially in the front where the weight is. The problem is selectable ones are really pricey.

And yes, Edge Rangers utilize nearly all the 4x4 stuff, except the differential and shafts. There was a post on here of a guy who converted his edge to 4x4 and had a REALLY nice post that detailed everything, but for the life of me I can't find it.

I am going to see if the donor vehicle is still around. I could use the front diff off of it since the gearing would match the rear or find a D35 with 3.73 gears out of a Ranger. I really want manual hub and manual transfer case to try and bypass the electronics portion of the install. I know the tranny is crap in the donor so that is out of the question.

Is the 4wd Expo tranny a 5 speed? I am keeping it as an automatic.

Could I use the 5R55E out of a Mountaineer to get my over drive?

Well I still have the front diff from the donor vehicle. Time to find everything else.

Well I am going AWD.
