I have a 95 2wd M50D transmission in my 83 ranger along with a 2.3 turbo. The project is getting close to being done.
So is there a recommended transmission fluid to run seeing as i will be beating on this thing alittle more than a n/a truck and how much fluid does it take?

I use synthetic ATF.

Always remove the fill port first, THEN the drain. Fill it until it flows out of the fill port. Both ports are on the driver side.
I don't know the quantity, but there is a link on here for Owners manuals, which will tell you.

Anyone else have a preferred brand of fluid for the M50D?
I have heard of people mixing 40/60 or 50/50 of 80/90 weight and Ford ATF in there manual tansmissions, anyone have any thoughts on that?

I've just been using brands like Castrol or Valvoline "Dex/Merc" fluid.

I know some in the past were also using 0W-30 synthetic engine oil in their M5ODs, but haven't heard much on that subject lately, so I don't know who (if anyone) is still using it. Kindof been thinking of trying that, or maybe RP Synchromax to see what effect it might have on the hard-shifting issue that a suspected past dose of Mercon V brought about in my BII's trans.

I don't suggest mixing gear oil with the ATF, I've heard it's additives can attack the metals of the M5OD synchronizers (plus it's thicker viscosity may not lubricate the bearings properly).

I have been using Royal Purple Synchromax in my M50D-R1 HD for over 100K miles and like the smoother shifting it provides. I find it does have to be changed around 50K to 60K miles when the hard shifting starts to come back but it is worth it to me.
