I was just recently offered for free a 4x4 front and rear differential for my ranger. I have a 87 ranger with the inline 4 motor. How difficult or possible would it be to do a 4x4 conversion on the truck?

Do a search on the subject. There is at least one person on here that has done it, but he had both complete trucks to do the swap. I do know that you have to swap teh frame out or modify your existing frame. Just having the differentials is not enough. If you have a boatload of time and access to all the parts you will need in addition to the differentials, go for it. Personally I would go find a 1st gen already set up for 4wd and swap teh good body panels from your truck as needed.

You will have to swap the engine cross member from the 4wd truck to your truck. The engine cross members are different for a 2wd and a 4wd Ranger and Explorer.

Like said above, it would be cheaper and easier to fine a 1st gen Ranger and rebuild it with your current truck.
