Hey guys.

I got a 1997 2.3L 2WD, it has the 4R44E transmission in it. I haven't taken it apart before, or ever removed it. I'm trying to plan a 4WD conversion with a D30 front. Anyways, the point is, this transmission has two housings that bolt onto the back of the case, one for 2WD and one for 4WD.

The 2WD housing is just a cone, and it has a female splined hole in the back that a male splined shaft slips into, from the driveshaft, to account for bumps in the rear.

The 4WD housing has holes to bolt a BW 1354 up to it.

Pretty much, I'm hoping that I can just go to a graveyard and find a 4WD housing off a tranny and a t-case, bolt the housing and then t-case up to my tranny. I'm not sure if there's a difference between the output shafts of the two, or if there's an adapter, or what the deal is. I don't really wanna buy and mess with a new tranny, mine works fine. And I'm pretty lazy.

Yeah, just asking, in case anyone knows.

And if I have to replace the entire output shaft.... :pissedoff:

To swap tailshaft housings requires dissasembly of the transmission and swapping tailshafts out since they are different between 2WD and 4x4. You'd be better off going to a yard and picking up a complete tranny.

Yeah, I figured. I was hoping it would be simple and cheap.

Nothing I ever do is. :fie:

Thanks for the help, I'll start scrounging around.

same sorta question

I just bought a ranger and i dont know much about this type of stuff but I am slowly learning , with the help of other ranger owners. I got a great deal on a 2002 ranger edge , only problem is it is 2wd and I live in a very snowy part of the world. Is it possible to go into a shop and get them to mess with it and convert it to a 4x4? (for less than what i paid for the truck!!)

also is my ranger edge a good truck? i've heard good and bad...
i love it and I havent had a problem yet other then going over a bridge on a windy day or driving in the snow...

and any inside ranger maintinence tips would be very appreciated. Like I said , this is my first vehicle and I am learning! thanks!

Yes is it fairly easy to convert your ranger to a 4x4. There are people that have done it but i dont know much about it other than it is easy to do with an Edge. The catch is that to make it finacially feasable, it is better to do the work yourself.

Also, it is forum courtesy to start your own thread to ask questions rather than hijacking other peoples threads. Welcome to TRS!
