Yeah I like it alot... lol dang your chevrons! I hope to make E-5 in like 4/5 years. I at least want to be a specialist by the time my next 3 years is up. E-1 pay sucks, lol.

What is the pay now? Think way back when I was in basic it was $89 cash per month! Hey, free room and board, all the fun on top of that!

Ex-Navy? Ran into some Navy people at the burger king on-base here at Fort Jackson a couple weeks ago, some top notch guys. Where were you stationed at?

I'm supposed to be part of the 3rd Stryker Brigade I believe... which is going to be awesome. As a 91B I'll get to "play" with the strykers pretty often. You know which unit your nephew is in?

E-1/PVT pay is up to $1,447/month with the raise we just got on the first of the year...and we still get free room and board etc etc... so its not that bad really. But we still pay taxes on it so its more like 1,100 or so after all the taxes, SGLI, and TSP takes all their stuff out.

The thing that kept me out of the army was those goddam oval hats. You wad them up and they spring back out into shape. That and the shoulder patches and tucking pants into boots.

We only have two types of headgear now, the berets and the patrol cap. The berets are pretty awesome once you get em shaped/shaved correctly, and the PC is just nice to have around for those times your wearing battle rattle and dont want that helmet on your head just yet.

We dont really even tuck our pants into the boots anymore either, we have drawstrings on the bottom of the legs that we use, tighten/tie those up and shove the strings up into the pant legs, and voila. Just blouse the extra leg material over the top of the boot and your done. All of our patches are velcro now too, no more sewing things onto the uniform (dress uniforms dont count, still have to sew our rank insignia onto those). So your name tapes, U.S. Army tapes, unit insignia, etc are all velcro.

My brother just left 3rd about 13 months ago. Now he is down in Polk. Myself....I was a 12B, first stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, and then here in Germany.

USAF during 'nam, USA and ANG during the 1st gulf war. congrats to you. whenever i'd get a new assignment, i'd always tell my self that "this is home now". i'd get out among the people, learn as much of the language as possible, make friends with the locals, and try to have some fun. good luck to you.

+1 million...Whatever you do, do not be a barracks rat. I had a couple of my soldier's that I would basically have to force out of the barracks.

I found out that I have until age 34 to apply for my commission and need to keep my GPA above 3.0. Currently my GPA is 3.75. I am well on my way.
