All my gears work except 2nd it 1/2 the time grinds and I'm not good when it comes to diagnosing and fixing this problem. Any suggestions on what I can try because right now i'm just not using 2nd.

For now just double clutch and shift into second gently.
Your ultimate issue is that the 2nd gear syncro is worn out. That one is almost always the first to go because second gear is the one you shift into most. You always hit it while working up through the gear, and it is the most common gear to be down-shifted to, and so that syncro ring wears out the fastest.
So the options you have now are to continue skipping 2nd, or to shift into it gently, to avoid grinding, get the trans rebuilt (I wouldn't get just that one syncro replaced because then you are doing all the work for only half the job) or find a new trans and hope it is in better shape.
