can't find what i want in search function so can someone tell me how to find what spline count i have? i have a 8.8 out of a first gen explorer ( i think ) guy had it out for his heep. should the metal ID tag say on it? are most explorers 31 spline?

I think all explorers are 31 spline. If the axle tube is 3 and a 1/4 inch in diameter its a 31 spline axle

All explorers are 31 spline. Mine is out of a 92 explorer.

04 4.0 5spd manual 4x4 spline count? going with some sort of locker........

my truck is tractionally challenged

Unless it is a FX4 its 28 spline

It's badgeless, I think they are all about advertising the Fx4's so I'm thinking 28 spline.

Thanks, will order a mini-spool asap. if that'll hold the power safely.

Frank

Look at your axle tubes near the spring perch, if the tube narrows down, then you've got a 28 spline (smaller bearings), if not, it's the 31. For a 2004 4.0L 4x4, it would have to be a FX4 Level II to get the 31 spline, and it would have the torsen limited slip inside it.
