Not trying to litter the forums with threads but I figure i shouldn't make 1 thread with multiple topics. Anyway I think I may have finally figured out the issue with my '89. After more testing and problem solving I believe the timing is the issue. Namely because after dialing my timing light in for 10 btdc (light should read at the 0 timing mark if properly in time), it jumps between the 13 and 20 timing marks on the crank. That would indicate 23-30 degrees!. No wonder the truck runs like crap.

My question is what causes this issue? is it a bad CPS? Any tips and tricks for checking the timing marks on the engine?

Is this DIS or do you have a distributor with a vac hose? Not sure, but I think on an 89 you have to disconnect something (spout connector?) to set the timing...or at least it sounds like it...

When I tried to check my timing it was sitting at 30* BTDC and I thought that was my problem too...but it turned out I had to disconnect the vac line from the distributor to set the timing...when I did it dropped back to about 8* BTDC...

So, maybe check that before anything else...

It has the DIS , I'm not sure if there are any special procedures that can help set it or if it is simply a bad cps. Still need to check timing marks ...

You didnt pull the SPOUT connector, that is normal timing. And its non adjustable. Pull the spout (little grey plug in a wire by the throttle body or ignition module, yes there are 2) and then check, i bet its at 10 deg.
