1990 Ranger custom 2.3 5 speed. Stock size tire were 215/70r14. The current are 225/70r14, I bought it with these, but they are old and getting bald. I want to know what would change if I put 27x8.5r14 tires on. I was looking at the general grabber AT, I know the load rating is less at 95, but it's a 4 banger, if I need to really haul heavy heavy stuff, I'll borrow a big truck, and use my old Exploder for towing. But what effect could it have of speedo, acceleration, gas mileage, mile counter...

Thanks for helping,
John

They are less than 3/4's of an inch bigger, you wont notice a difference.

Is there a way to fix the speedometer change to read correctly? I can't figure out if there is a worm gear in the transmission for the speedo or not. All the parts I see online don't show a gear of any kind.

Dont know what year they switched from a physical speedo cable to an electric sensor but 1990 sounds old enough to still have a gear and cable... :dunno:

Edit: Yes it's mechanical, I found a really good thread on how to adjust the speedo with different gears.

If it did have a gear, would it be in the transmission or the dash? I know the odometer is mechanical drive using two gears, but I'm not certain if they also control the speedo

The gear you change is on the end of the cable where it connects to the transmission or transfer case. Very easy.

Lots of good info here, including calculators to help you see how much your speedometer will change.

yes, at the transmission, likely just figure out which gear you have, and get one with one less tooth, on average one tooth does about 7% from what I remember reading back in the day. The switch to electronic was in '98 I believe, my '97 has a sensor in the side of the trans so still takes a gear, which I need to change since I went to taller tires...
