Yeah, they have been throwing this rumor up every year or two for five years now. At this point, I would love to see it happen, but I won't believe it until one shows up at my dealer.
I think it would cut into Expedition and F150 crew cab sales. Plus they don't have a need for it. You figure the Escape ( I don't think it is selling that well ), then you go to the Edge, Explorer, and end up with the Expedition. It would be the shortest of the full frame vehicle that Ford makes and would fit between the Explorer and Expedition.
Honestly though how many people would really buy this? I suspect it's too updated and modernized to attract most of the die hard bronco fans and styling and design too outdated and niche to attract the everyman. I'm not saying many of us wouldn't want one, but few would actually buy it.
Hell aren't the new exploders basically min-vans and wranglers glorified street machines with fully independent suspension?
If they offered one in 2016, I'd buy one. Literally, if it came out with a coyote and a 6 speed... I'd need to buy some new underwear at first sight. The concept drawing they had there looked awesome. Straight off the lot, sticker price. No questions asked.
All it needs is a pseudo-cage and removable hard top like the old ones. Rhino line the whole interior, have flush mount seat brackets for a smooth bed when you pull them out... Hell yeah. The concept drawing had a solid front axle too.
The 5.0 is a fun engine to have in a Mustang, but in the trucks, and even 5.0 Mustang vs Taurus SHO, the butt dyno says that 3.5 GTDI kicks it's pants off.
