I'd also stick to the same ratio.
over the years I've had smaller and larger tires on my 2005 2.3 3.73 gears.
there is a noticeable difference in power ( and braking ) with a 5-7% difference in tire sizes.
 
the axle housing (tube length) is unique, if i recall, axle shafts are specific to this housing. i am the proud owner of a prototype "hibrid" housing that has the axle tubes for the 2010-11 but has the 09 style center with the hole for the speed sensor.

does the center also have the hole for the watts link pivot?
