Those are originally welded to the bed to give it structural rigidity from side to side. The square tubing may be a good idea. But I would recommend attaching it to the bed to follow the original construction.

Sounds great, thanks. I will probably go with bare steel tube and POR-15 coating after welding.

Yes i agree with your decision.Have fun with that project.My crossmembers still look like the day i finished them,course only been a year.

Google “galvanized hat channel” used in commercial construction. A couple of years ago I found some hat channel the right size to replace the original crossmembers.

Hello - have a 97 ranger, took the bed off to work on the frame. Wondering if you could just leave the crossmembers there and cover them with slightly oversized ones - larger in width and height, thickness of the metal - of course you would treat the existing ones prior to covering them. If your making the crossmembers you could oversize them so they are touching new to old.

Nothing saying you can’t, but it would definitely be more work with a lower quality end result.
