I own a 2008 Ranger 3.0 2WD Automatic Ranger Sport and I've had this high idle issue since a month after I bought it a year and a half ago. Many of you 2.3L Manual owners seem to be having the same issue with your rangers but mines the V-6 automatic and it still idles high. The RPMs are higher than normal whenever! When i put it in neutral (moving or stopped) it goes to 1500-2200 Rpms, when its in park it does the same. When I come to a complete stop it in drive it idles at 1200. I use to be able to hit the gas real quick and it seemed to clear out and the Rpms would drop down to 700 like normal. Hitting the gas now has no effect. I've taken it to the dealer about 20 times with no exaggeration to get this problem fixed. I'm really regretting purchasing this truck seeing how I've had so many problems with it. Here's to list a few:
2 inertia switches (both went out the first 3 days i had it)
AC Compressor Relay switch (less than 10 days after purchase)
Thermostat (month later)
Oil pan gasket (3 months ago)
Rear main Seal (4 months ago)
Alternator (6 months ago)
Fuel rail (which was damaged by a mechanic at Lake Elsinore Ford)
Inside the cab, both of the seat belt button adjusters have broken
Auxiliary connection on dash broke
ABS in rear was locking up
And it currently leaks oil. (coming from the rear main seal again)

And as of this morning my transmission keeps slipping causing the rpms to jump up 300 revs for only a second then goes back down.

Any ideas?

Its a great looking truck but im so sick of all the problems!

nice lisence plate :)

i wonder if lemon laws apply to new vehicles? that is an aweful lot to go wrong on a less-than-one-year-old vehicle.

Ya i researched lemon law and discovered its gotta be the same reoccuring problem within a year and they have 3 chances to fix it. the 4th time and its a lemon. The problem is it use to idle high whenever it was really hot out but its winter and its doing it constantly. I would always take it in after it was idling high and when the day arrived to take it in it would be cold out thus, they could never see the problem. So i dont have consecutive times taking it in where they saw it. And i purchased the truck august 11th 2007. my truck was off the first shipment of 08 ranger sports from back east.

then take the truck back to them now that its doing it again. and if they dont fix it, KEEP taking it back to them.

Contact Ford Motor company Customer Service. Request the names of the regional manger on up the chain, and complain, complain, complain, and when you think you complained enough complain more. Complain about the return issues, ie leaky rear main, there is either a major defect or poor workmanship when it was reinstalled.

Yeah i already had the rear main seal replaced once and now its leaking again. and as of today i believe my transmission issues is the torque converter. When i start to take off I press the gas and i go now where for a second or two. the RPMS go up but I dont move then it jerks forward and starts to move. I have an appointment with the dealership i purchased it from and my dad use to work for them, he left on good terms, so I should be getting more pull than the average joe.... i hope.

So my truck wouldnt last til my monday appointment so its in the shop right now. I started it up this morning in my driveway and stood outside smoking a cigarette letting it warm up (I don't smoke in my truck). And when it was warming up the RPMS went up to 3000 in idle and stood there!

Heres a pic this morning. (notice there is no one touching the gas.

Heres one from last night my check engine light that came on earlier!
I put half a tank in the night before and look how much gas gets sucked down with my RPMS so much higher!

Uhm OK, so where are all of the LITTLE things that tend to cause a high idle on that list? Did they replace all the cheap stuff like all the little air intake and vacuum valves, etc? How about a full tune-up like plugs and maybe wires or a cap? Who knows... sounds like you've had all sorts of stuff done to the truck that would probably not have anything to do with a high idle. And if all that stuff went bad regardless, I would have been making them give me a new truck or suing them about 6 months ago.

Hate to hear about all your trouble, but I've been there and done that. Make sure every time you take it to the dealer you contact Ford customer service and TALK TO THE SAME PERSON. Document time and date when you talk to them and get printout on work performed at dealership. If you do not keep good records they will screw you over. I finally had to take my truck to a dealer 2 1/2 hours away and they hooked up an on board diagnostic box with a push button that you pushed every time it screwed up. It would record 2 or three times then you take it back to the dealer. They finally figured mine out after a week or so with the box ,after messing with it for 11 months at local dealerships. Wish you luck

Ya. The dealership is honestly trying to fix everything they can but I think its more of a battle to fix a shitty built truck than anything else. I save all my receipts and im rummaging throught my filing cabinet looking for everyone of them cause I contacted a Lemon Car law firm and they're telling me that I probably have a case and to fax over all the writeups.

Be careful! The Ford fan-boys on this site will take you to task for saying anything bad about Fords!

I'm not talking bad I just got a shitty built truck by them. I'm not saying every ford truck is a heap. My dad has owned fords his whole life and had nothing but great times with them. Its just when i decide to by my Ford truck it seems to be a dud.

I got my truck back a week ago or so and it turns out it was the Throttle Positioning cable connecting the throttle to the PCM. It had an aggresive turn which caused it to bind on the housing and thats why it has been idling high since I got it and it finally broke a few weeks ago causing the RPM to never come down. But its been replaced thanks to Ford warranty and It runs better than it did the day I got it!
