Hi everyone I am new to the forum however after trying to use the search function nothing came up to answer my question.
I have a lead on a 2007 Fx4 level 2 however when i run the vin number it comes up as a 2007 ford ranger 4WD 4dr SuperCab 126" XLT.
The pictures of the truck show the level two badging however anyone could have just replaced the doors.
Is this how the level two is supposed to show up on the car fax or the vin decoder at ford-trucks.com? or am i clearly being lied to?
Any help would be appreciated! If this is the wrong forum I apologize; please let me know the proper forum to post this topic to. thanks for your time.

Just pissing in the wind here but i doubt the fact its a FX4 lvl 2 would show up on a history report.

The FX4 stuff was an option package not a seperate model. It would be like it saying "2007 Ford Ranger 4wd supercab tow package" or something.

If that makes sense

I'm all but positive that you cannot determine a Level II by the VIN. Like rusty ol' says (above), it was an option package, not a separate model.

What's the VIN? Guys here decoded my VIN, it may tell you something about the options... or not..

Yeah, I suspect it would take something like a Marti report though.

Thanks for all of your replies! here is the VIN 1FTZR45E37PA74247
now for everyones favourite question, is it worth the $16,500 he is asking for?

As an update to the thread i was able to contact a ford dealership in town and they did confirm that it has the lvl 2 trim. i am unaware however what system they used to check it. thank you for all of your help! now it comes down to how much is it going to hurt my wallet! 💰😭

I just ran VIN checks on several websites on my 2002 FX4. None of them came up with FX4. They did indicate it is 4WD. One site indicted it is an Edge model.

Another site indicated it is an XL model but had various model options to click on. I clicked on FX4, then it showed all the features a 2002 FX4 came with including 31" tires.

I don't think you can get much information with a free VIN check online. There are VIN checks online that require a fee. They may provide more information. If you are willing to pay, I would trust a Marti report over anything else.

I just saw that you got information from a dealer. That is great they can look it up and have full information from a VIN. I know when I buy online through dealerships, they ask for the VIN to verify I am getting the right part.

Hey there! thanks for running your VIN as a comparison to mine! I will check out the Marti report as well however the parts guy from the ford dealership was very confident and surprised that it was a level 2. They appear have become a bit of a rare vehicle these days!

They are rare...

Be sure to get a good look of the underside. Bottom of the doors... front core support... underside of the bed... frame... spring hangers. They also like to rust under the wheel flares.

All these areas can be fixed... but should be negotiated.

Ok i will keep those areas in mind when i go to inspect it. Just as a thought experiment is it worth it to upgrade the rear brakes from drum to disk on these models? I understand they have 10 inch instead of 9 inch drums i dont really see much of a reason to upgrade aside from brake fade from heat.

No need to upgrade to disc brakes in the rear, my drums perform just fine. The only thing you could do is to get a set of drums off of an Aerostar. They are finned, where the rangers are flat. You would just have to hog out the center bore of the drum. It's do-able, but only if you have time and money to kill / burn.

Like others mentioned above, check underneath thoroughly for rust. Under the adhesive heat shields on the bed, it can really rust, and be totally out of sight.

Post some pics if you get a chance.

I hate the drum rear brakes and have upgraded the rears to disc on several of the Rangers I have owned.

Be aware that if you really have a Level II it has the Torsen rear end, which has the larger axle bearings and the larger pattern to attach the brake backing plate. To put disc brakes on that, there is a kit you can get from Ford Performance - but its labelled as being for a Ford 9" axle and it will not talk about the large bearing 8.8" axle but it does fit. It basically has the rear calipers and rotors from a 05-10 Mustang GT which bolt on to that mounting plate. It takes a bit of minor tweaking to make it work on the Ranger but the brakes are way better than the drums - no freezing up in the snow/slush, no grabbing/sticking in the rain and much more predictable application. All the other Rangers (non-Torsen) have the small bearing axles which fit the rear calipers and rotors from the 94-04 Mustang.

Marlin,
Please, please call the dealership back & find out how they determined Level II just from the VIN. As time goes on there's gonna be more & more fakes come up so we need a way to positively identify them.

For-what-it's-worth; a nice looking (didn't see it in person), red, high miles (256k), Alabama rust free, Alcoa wheeled, manual trans, '06 Level II was on Facebook for $5,600 recently. Sold in a couple days. $16,500 seems outrageous to me but we're in very different markets.
