Hey guys just recently got a 05 level 2, wondering if there is any problems with anything on these? Any tranny or motor issues? It has 54k on it just wondering because i know the old ohv engine is pron to lifters wearing out and the a4ld not being so great, anyway anyone with the 4.0 sohc chime in, thanks!

Do you have an automatic or manual? If it's an automatic, I would change the fluid right now and continue to do it every 40k miles or so. As long as you keep up on the maintenance, it should last you a long time. The timing chain issues with the SOHC have all been fixed by 05, so the engine should be really reliable too.

Yea its an auto, no cel or anything works perfect im planning on changing the dif fluids and oil so ill pick up a filter and some atf as well.

Anyone else? What about a superchips cortex on it? Anyone have that?

Don't bother with a Superchips Cortex. It is a generic tune and they advertise multiple tunes... but there's only one 87 octane performance tune. Talk to Brenspeed, henson motorsports, or rogueperformance. For a similar price, you get a custom tailored SCT tuner with three tunes to select from.

I've seen a few spin the crank key-way and shred timing chains. That's a 1 in a million failure though.

Saw one pop a few valve rollers off. Had the cam rolling right against the valve, but that was a maintenance thing, 70K on the clock, only on its second oil filter. That was nasty when we tore it down.

Holy crap! Only 35k between oil changes? Lol i cannot understand why someone would treat a vehicle like that! Let alone a newer sohc engine!! Also how much does the sct tuner cost with a custom tune?? Thanks for the help guys.

Check out RoguePerformance.com for your tuner. Xcal2 with 3 tunes is about $385.

Thanks man! Will do how much of a gain is possible on a stocker? Most ill ever do is prob a set of headers and a k&n cone style intake and programmer, also anyone know whats on a level 2 to make the exhaust sound different, theres a definant change compared to my othet rangers?? Thanks all

Usually the premium fuel performance programs will give you 12-15 whp. But they do wonders for automatic transmissions (if you have one). I've talked to several guys about aftermarket intakes (especially Fred from Rogueperformance) and they all agree that Volant makes the best intake for the ranger. The open element intakes will indeed flow more air than the stock unit, but the air its flowing is warmer nulling the performance results. The volant unit has an enclosed filter box that pulls air from the stock location, but with a better filter and a smooth pipe. But remember, even the volant intake won't do much for the whole powerband. It only benefits the top end.

^^ditto on the box. I'm running a SLP/Roush Thunderbox airbox and a custom steel tube and I think it's the best and cheapest solution out there....if you can find the damn box! haha.

With your auto, shift improvments are incredible. As far as you can go without opening up the trans and installing shift kit components. Depending on which tune you run, while it may add up to 20hp or so, you'll see gains in MPG too. Alot of guys with a similar truck like your '05 4.0, run a 92/93 torque tune in their trucks on the daily. It gives the best power where you need it, as well as additional mileage. The mileage increase you get more than pays for the added cost of the fuel....plus, you've got more power on tap when you need it.

And IMO, headers are a waste unless your boosted. Just catback it and intake it, maybe crank pulley it and call it good. Of course, adding the tuner and have the tunes written to those mods. Having the tuner's tunes setup to your mods takes full advantage of those mods and makes 'em better than stock programming.

Do the stock manifolds already flow well? Wheres the cheapest place for that intake? Thanks for the help i email rouge performance, will it come ready to just plug in and go? Also what do the do to the tranny?

Fred's great and he actually responds to emails....something that can't be said about Bamachips. He's really knowledgable and answers just about any question you ask him. But you do need to do some researching yourself...I always feel dumb when I ask him or someone like him a question that I'm sure he's gotten a million times. lol. What it does for the tranny is that it changes shift points and firms shifts up some. Also speeds the shift up too resulting in longer tranny life too. Alot of parameters can be changed by the user(you). You can compensate for tire size changes or gear changes so your speedometer displays accurately and not 5-15 off. Timing, shift points, redline, speed limiter, etc.. Xcal2 and Xcal3 are both very good products and tons of folks use 'em and love 'em. It's one of those bang for the buck mods.

Ok awesome, brenspeed emailed me back and said 379 for my truck for the x3, is fred someone At rouge performance? Both seems legit, ive heard nothing but bad about bamachips and ill never even consider them after what i heard.
