I have a 2005 ranger 2 wheel drive with 3.0 V6. The last time the oil filter was changed, I must have cross-threaded the filter, because now when i try to change the filter, it spins on about half way, and i have to use a filter wrench to get it the rest of the way on.

Can the filter nipple be easily replaced? and, where would be the best place to find one, I have looked online, and haven't found anything. Does it just unscrew with a large allen wrench?

Thanks for any help...

Why would the thread be only "cross threaded" the last half way and not the first? Cross threading starts at the beginning of the thread so the fact you can spin it on freely the first half tells me you need some additional investigation. How did the original filter (the one guilty of cross threading) spin on? Did it bind? Have you removed the filter and inspected the nipple threads? Tried another filter?

An oil filter's threads are softer than the male filter nipple, so if there was any cross threading going on with your previous filter it would more than likely be the filter's threads that were ruined, and not the nipple's.

Have you checked the threads on your new filter? Things happen, and it's not out of the realm of possibility that the filter's threads are defective from the factory.

You can try to chase the threads with a tap and dye set if the threads are all screwed up. The only thought I have is that you shouldn't have been able to get it halfway on before it crossthreaded that usually happens right away unless you forced it the whole time.

check to see if the old gasket came off with the filter. sometimes they stay behind usually the tell tell sign is you cant get it tight enough to stop the oil leak.

i worked in an express lube and usually when we did that the thing sprayed oil all over the place. it only happened once in a blue moon though

if the threads are messed up i would just go to the dealer and get a new threaded portion and call it good. something that needs to be serviced as often as your oil filter should be in perfect shape to avoid other troubles down the road (bad filter seal or worse)
