2003 UK Ranger jumping out of 5th gear

Hey Guys, my partner and I run a Land Rover repair shop here in the UK and have had a question from a friend about his 2003 Ranger.

So he says it started jumping out of 5th a few weeks ago and now will not stay in at all.

I've no experience of these transmissions so am looking for some help here!

Are there any common problems I need to be looking at?

p.s. I think our 2003 Ranger is a rebadged Mazda B-series pick up.

It's the other way around Joe. B Series trucks are re-badged Rangers.

I'm assuming that your friend's truck has a standard (manual) transmission? Not shifting into any particular gear is a sign of serious trouble. Might be time to drop the gearbox and have a look inside.

Good advice!

Pulled the transmission today and stripped the transfer-box off then disassembled the rear of the transmission case.

I had heard from a friend that the 5th gear thrust washer was a weak point and could break around the oil channels and so it proved! It had fallen down into the bottom of the transmission and was allowing 5th gear to 'float' and hence disengage.

Apparently the newer part is made from a different material!

New parts arrive tomorrow so should all be ok
