Ok I'm throwing 2 codes don't remember the numbers off hand but they are lean bank one and lean bank two. The truck THINKS its lean but it is really pig rich with black smoke comming out the exhuast and barely running. any ideas? i believe that code says it could be o2, mas, or coil pack if memory serves me. i find it hard to believe 2 o2 sensors went out at the same time so i sort of think it might be a dirty mas. any ideas PLEASE throw them my way im clueless

If I had to guess at your lean codes, it's P0171 and P0174. Usually that means vacuum leak, and if it's running that badly, it's going to be a big one. Look for collapsed PCV or EVAP hoses, or look for hoses that have been disconnected and left off if you/someone else has just worked on it.

Lean bank 1 and 2 codes do NOT mean that the O2's are bad.

It can be related to a vacuum leak as stated above. If there is un-metered getting into the engine (air that has not been metered by the MAF) it will create a lean condition, which the O2 sensors will pick up on (seeing more oxygen in the exhaust). The PCM will then start adding fuel to the mix to try and combat the lean condition, thus making it pig rich. Get a can of brake cleaner or carb cleaner and spray around the vacuum lines, upper/lower intake gaskets and throttle body. If the RPM picks up when you spray a certain area you have a vacuum leak in that area.

The SOHC engines have a problem with the crackcase breather tube elbow on the passenger valve cover rotting and splitting causing a huge vacuum leak. The tube runs the front of the pass valve cover to the rear and back around towards the drivers side. Just inspect all the vacuum lines and you will find your problem.

hmmm... ok the only thing thats been done to it is i just changed the spark plugs a couple months ago. any chance anyone has a pic of what i need to be looking for??

well i found the vacuum leak. MASSIVE! comming out of the 90* elbow that hooks to the egr? i believe? some sort of sensor on the front passenger side of the intake manifold. thanks again guys. now i just gotta find a part number
