This 02 ranger - automatic 4.0 - just stopped working - I have looked at all of the posts here and although some are similar, mine appears a little different. 4x4 has always worked fine - recently stopped working - lights on dash light up when vehicle is started, when engaging 4x4 ( hi or lo ) nothing happens - no dash lights flashing. Put 12 v to electric motor and 4x4 engaged and dash light worked. Have replaced switch, control module and lastly a diferent motor ( all used parts ) - when switch is engaged there is a clicking sound from control module. Have checked all fuses. Is there a speed sensor or anything else that I should try.

Are you having probs switching to 4hi, 4lo, or both?? If both check connections at tcase. You can rule out VSS cause you have shift on the fly, allowing you to switch to 4hi at any speed...check your GEM/CTM if you haven't already, its mounted behind your radio on the left side vertically

Brought truck in for diagnosis at ford - they found code 1525 - bad contacts inside the 4x4 motor - wanted 525 to fix it. Sent away for remanufacture motor for 60 - waiting for delivery

My ranger started doing the same yesterday, where is the control module for the 4x4? I have the same truck as yours... the 02 XLT. Oh and where is the motor that you sent away to be re manufactured? On top the t-case? And RangerSVT, whats the GEM/CTM... do i just check for 12V with a voltmeter? I have no idea when it comes to this 4WD system ha.

the control module is in the right front kick panel - it is black with a white label (4X4CM) on it. the motor is located on the xfer case - look on the underside underneath the drivers side you will see it there - connected with a wiring pigtail. Very easy to get out and in - 4 small bolts. I should be getting the motor tomorrow - I will post to say how I made out. If you have flashing lights ( 4hi & 4low ) then you may have another problem - maybe just a fuse - check those first - the one inside cab and inside eng compartment

No flashing lights. I can hear clicking... sounds like it's coming from passenger side, so that must be the control module( i could hear it when the 4x4 worked also)I haven't dug into yet, but fuses will be first of course! What do i look for to see if the motor is bunk? It's a solenoid motor right?

The motor is one piece - you have the same symptoms as mine - earlier post I had ford diagnose this - told me it was corroded contacts inside the 4x4 motor - there is a thread here that shows you how to take apart and clean the motor - works for others - seemed to hard for me. Let me put the motor in tomorrow and I will let you know if it works - if it works for me then it will for you,

replaced motor with rebuilt motor - still no 4x4 hi or lo - motor casing gets warm so I assume power is going there - still clicking inside cab where 4x4CM is. Any suggestions anyone - ?????????

I pulled my motor off yesterday, and it looks like its been replaced once before... the duesch(previous owner) musta did it himself because one bolt wasn't completely threaded in ha, and it was also missing a bolt. I'm going to either replace it or clean it. I just have a feeling thats what it is... and i better get on this the snow is melting and it's so icy... also, got stuck yesterday. had to be rescued by my moms Dakota... embarrassing.

If you have corroded connectors inside the motor what about the pigtail? Maybe the pigtail is trashed... i don't know.
