Ok, this is driving me completely nuts. What type of/model hood is on my 2002 Ranger XLT, 2WD???? How many different hoods did they make?? And what did they put them on??

Bought the truck new in 01, part of deal was a bug shield. Wanted clear (so I could paint the back side of it). Fast forward 15 years, GD's boyfriend walks around truck, catches jacket on corner of shield. Now it is a two piece shield. So GD wants an new one.

Go online and get asked what type of hood. Regular or Power Dome? Or what model?? OK, its an XLT; but, does not have the depression going down the center! Has the two ridges on the outer sides. It is not a metal hood, it is composite (plastic).

Call the different vendors. Get told it is not a "Power Dome" hood (because no center depression) and also get told all XLTs had power dome hoods. What!!! What the hell!!

Want this one (clear): http://www.summitracing.com/parts/wam-72-96131/applications/year/2002

Get told it will not fit XLT. It fits the XL. Again, what!! Is there a completely different hood for the XL??

So can anyone tell me how many different hoods did Ford make for this flippen truck??? And what shield I need??

Here's a breakdown of the 2 different Ranger hoods from that era:

98-03 "flat" hood:
There's an aluminum "flat" hood used on all 98-2000 Rangers and most 2wd trucks from 01-03. It's a bit of a misnomer because it's not completely flat. There are small body lines that run from the grille toward the windshield, but they taper down into the hood and get smaller as they go, eventually blending into the hood entirely. I've seen it labeled as an "XLT" hood, but should be the same for XL models too.

01-03 Edge hood:
Sometimes called "powerdome" hood, it's made of composite, and has a raised center section that maintains the same height all the way from front to rear ( about 1-1.5 inches). This hood has a divot down the middle of the powerdome from front to rear. It came on all 4wd/edge trucks, and 2wd Edge models.

Trucks with the Edge hood also used a different grill shell than trucks with the flat hood. The Edge hood was used with a black mesh grill insert, and the grill shell had no crossbar across the top. The "flat" hood was used with a grill shell that had a horizontal crossbar on the top, and came with either gray or chrome egg-crate grill insert.
Because of this, there are some minor design changes to the hoods themselves. The differences you're running into is the fact that the leading edge of the 2 hoods is different, which obviously affects the design of the bug shield. The Edge/powerdome hood has a straighter leading edge that is perfectly horizontal from the front, andoverlaps the top of the grill, visually acting as the crossbar. The aluminum "flat" hood had a bit or a rise in the leading edge to account for the taller grill shell.

I thought all 4.0 SOHC powered Rangers in 02 had the power dome hood, no just the Edge. I know mine has the power dome hood.

Engine has nothing to do with it really. If it's an 01-03 with torsion bar suspension in front, it should have the composite Powerdome/Edge hood. That means all 4WD trucks, and 2wd Edge models. While it's true that all of those trucks had v6s, but it was also possible to get a 3.0 or 4.0 v6 in a 2wd truck with coilsprings too, and those trucks came with the "flat" hood, so we can't just go by the engine type.

So, if it's an 01-03 truck, then the following applies.

If it's 4WD (Edge or not), it's got the Powerdome/Edge hood.

If it's a 2WD with torsion bars in the front (Some Edge trucks), then it would've had the composite Powerdome/Edge hood.

If it's 2WD, with coilsprings, a chrome or gray plastic egg-crate grille insert in a grill shell with a horizontal bar across the top, then it should've come with the aluminum "flat" hood.

Got it!!!

There are only two hoods. The flat one, not completely flat, but, is flat at the windshield end and it is aluminum. And the other one called by some a "Power Dome" that has a divot down the middle and a raised edge at back that drops down to meet the cowl (like the one on the FX4).

So I know what to order. Ordered one for the XL - Wade Part Number 72-96131

Thanks!!!
