My ranger hesitates a few seconds after putting in any gear and then it will jerk. Is it something to do with syncronization or maybe the gear shifting lever or what is wrong please? Other problem is trans. pan leaks when the truck gets to normal temperature. I think the pan may be warped. Can i fix problem with a new gasket and bolts? Will that cause the jerking and hesitation I have when putting it in gear?

A pan leaking by itself will not cause a delayed engagement. Low fluid level might. I would suspect that the pan just needs a gasket. Fix your leak, get your fluid topped off, and try it. There really aren't any syncrhonizers in an auto, nor could the lever cause a delayed engagement.

If correcting the fluid level doesn't fix your issue I would suspect the transmission is beginning to wear out, since total clearance in the clutch packs effects engagement feel. As the clutches wear the clearance increases, so more pressure is needed to engage a clutch, and more pressure causes a harsher feel. That would account for the jerking.

THANKS FOR THE INFO .. iVE kept the fliuds topped off checking every thirty miles or so ... the trk has been leaking since I was an ameture and didnt know the differance in inch id's and ft. lds. My rookie mistake but the pan was leaking when I bought it and i change gasket and filter @ 80k .. Im going to have to retap all the bolt holes to the tranny pan got a better gasket this time,, didnt know if it loosing pressure would cause the jerking, Thanks again for the advise .

My '02 FX4 has 79k miles on it, sometimes it's hard to go from park to drive (auto) Could it be the same issue with wear? My tranny fluid is good. I use the parking brake to try to eliminate the hard engagement, but it still does it. Sometimes it's smooth as can be though.

If you check everything previously mentioned 1st, It could be valve body issues, these 5r44e & 5r55e's are well known to have valve body issues. I just chased a non engagement into drive issue finally back to a worn valve body after doing a complete tear down. A New Valve body from Central valve body fixed everything. The slow or harsh engagement is a sure sign of a worn valve body especially if the trans shifts normal after engaging.
