I bought a 4.0 out of a rolled explorer and was going to swap it into my 2000 ranger, but upon taking the valve covers off, a roller had somehow came out from under the cam. Using a prybar I was actually able to pop it back in place without having to remove the cam assembly. I can't imagine that happens easily, but I was trying to figure what could have caused it and since that happened if there is anything else I should check out. I'm going to try to manually turn the engine over at least one full revolution to make sure I'm getting full rotation out of it.
