Hello TRS,

I am new to the forum because I just bought a ranger! It is a little bit of a project. My brother in law sold it to me under the impression that it was not worth the work to get it back running. (Thats what the "mechanics" told him, of course) So he decided that the truck no longer suited his needs and sold it to me for what scrap offered him. Its a 2001 Ford Ranger, 2.3L Inline 4, Manual Transmission. 260k miles. From what I can tell its the Ford 23 Duratec/Mazda L engine. At the moment it is not starting. With the CEL light illuminated I figured it would be in my best interest to start with the codes. The only code it had was P0404 an egr circuit range/performance code. After researching this code I have read accounts of engines being incapable of idle while the egr is stuck open or closed. The only issue I am having now is locating the egr valve. The only diagram of the (plastic, ehh rubish) intake that matched mine did not include an egr valve in the diagram. Although it did have an egr tube mounting surface labeled. I Located the tube and could not trace it to the other end behind the engine, even after removing the intake.

So in a nutshell, Does anyone have any experience with egr valves on a ford 2.3l engine? Could you give me pointers on how to locate the egr valve? Is it located in such a position that it has to be accessed by droping the eninge or some how removing part of the firewall? Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks alot

egr valve is a big diaphram with a vaccum line going to it. if you follow the egr tube from the manifold it should run into the valve and then from the valve to the intake.

Yeah, you have to let the back of the trans drop down to access it. It's not a vacuum operated valve on the 2.3, it's electronic.

If you look down the back of the engine from up top you should be able to see it on the passenger side (I think). Grey or black round object with an electrical connector bolted to the back of the head.

Also, if the EGR is truly causing your no-start condition, you should be able to start it by holding the throttle part-way open.

Thanks!

I am going to give holding the throttle open a try. I think it could be a combination of a few things. I took the intake off and everything and could not get to the egr just as Destroyer said. Although my egr tube was filthy, which i will clean once i can get the egr off. I hope it is the egr valve because I can drop the transmission if need be, I would rather do that than anything with timing or a engine rebuild. I will post again when I have more details.

destroyer,
you sound like you may have had experience directly with the egr on a 2.3l. I saw something once about taking apart the firewall. I hope that is not the case. Have you replaced the egr by removing the transmission or are you just speculating? I sure hope your right.

Thanks again,
KSpencer
