2001 ranger 4x4

I’m new to forum so hope this is right spot. Have a 2001 4x4 ranger. 4.0 auto. 4x4 not working at all. Just got pickup, no 4x4 lights on dash. Other lights work. Check fuses good. Remove connector from four wheel module and can hot wire yellow and orange wire and motor runs below. Scan tool bring up (comm failure or no controller available. )The data link wire is good to module. I want to see the light on dash light up for 4 low and high so I grounded wires gray and light blue at module and no lights, should this have worked. There is no clicking coming from module, it has been replace by one from salvage before me. wire from control selector knob are good to module. Again would like to see lights on dashboard light up for 4 wheel drive. Thanks

Welcome to the forum

No dash lights reads like the 4x4CM(module) is bad, a known failure on 2001-2005 Ranger 4x4s
Ford redesign it in 2006 but its not backwards compatible, and even the newer version had issue, less issues but still failed

You can try wrecking yards, but take the Ranger and swap modules out on site until you get a working one
No Hot swaps, key off to do the swap

2001-2005 Mazda B-series 4x4s also used same 4x4CM
Explorer Sport Trac used same module in 2001 and 02

Fords last version was 1L54-7H417-AE<<< AE is the version number, it started with version AB, so AC, AD and then AE
Not sure that matters much since any version could fail, not 100% failure just a "known" failure

4x4CM is what runs those lights
Although they should come on with key on for just 1-2 seconds, thats a "bulb test" that the cluster does on power up, nothing to do with any of the systems, just a bulb test to see if bulbs are burnt out

Ok found it . My lights never come on. Just 4x4 light don’t work, never on. Going to remove dash and find out what is wrong. So when you key on , your grounding dash for a second through something.

The 4x4CM grounds the 4WD lights, so if its not working then bulbs won't come on
