My daughters Ranger started flashing the OD light on the dash. A day later, she says that it is sometimes free revving while driving. After checking the fluid, it was a bit low. I went ahead and changed out the filter and fluid. Level is good now. No leaks anywhere with it. OD light is still flashing. I finally got Forscan and pulled the codes today. P0731 P0733 P0734. These are the trans codes. What would cause all of this at once?
Thanks for any input.

Since the trans is slipping in 1st, 3rd and 4th, my first guess would be the O/D sprag is FUBAR. That's a common engagement for all three of those gears and also reverse. See attachment. This is assuming it's a 5R55E. That's what's in my '01 4.0 4x4.

I'm not an ASE tech though, so it's probably best to have it diagnosed by a trusted shop.

Just had the same happen with my 04 only had 59K on it! I bought it a month ago and 10 days later complete tranny rebuild needed to the tune of $3551.00 with updated valves, shift kit and added a larger trans cooler, as G8orFord mentioned above it was indeed the OD Sprag and Planetary that was roached shop said the OD issue is super common on these trucks usually from heat but known for failure
