Replaced starter 4,000 miles ago. Today after several trips, with no warning starter will not do anything. Battery voltage is 12.65v, everything else works fine. Connections tight and clean. Tapped starter and got a very weak grrr one time. Now nothing. Clutch position switch has been jumped out after repeated failures and still is. This is my work/farm truck and I'm out of business till its fixed. Need help!

You need to test for B+ volt at the 2 wires on the starter/solenoid. Also always clean up the bat terminals with an issue like this.

Thanks. Battery is new and I have already cleaned terminals. On this lemon, I mean truck, solenoid is integral to the starter and HARD to access requiring removal of front wheel and inner fender well. Know of any remote place to check the voltage?

Human nature being what it is. Showing up with that name and trashing a vehicle that most of us like is probably not the best way to elicit positive responses. That being said, you should have power at the big wire all the time. Even when the keys are in your pocket. You should have power at the small wire while trying to start it. Report back.

FYI. your power train combo is one of the more bullet proof ones ever manufactured. And for the most part the truck is cheap and easy to fix. Remember it was born over 12 years ago and probably worked hard on a Farm.

Also I would just replace the CPP switch. It takes 2 minutes. Bypassing it just causes issues LT. Maybe the truck was never taken care of? Maybe a crappy starter was used 4k ago.

Thanks for the help.

Sorry if I offended anyone but I am a stickler for equipment maintenance and proper operation. Equipment of any kind costs too much not to maintain it. But after spending untold hours and almost as much money as I paid for the truck in '06 just to keep it running in addition to regular maintenance and have it lay down on me time after time, I am rather sour on this one. Guess I have been spoiled by 300k on each of three previous brand x and y vehicles with little repair needed.

I'll get to work on this one again tonight and let you know what I find.

Thanks again.

How many miles on it? 2 common issues on the 2.3 are a plug that blows out on the manifold. You epoxy it back on. ... The other is the pcv valve/hose. I have never replaced one but it is down somewhere around the starter. I guess it can be a pita. If you need a new starter you might consider pulling the wheel and replacing it.

Removed starter Friday. Worked without load. Took to Advance Auto where I bought it. They checked it on their machine and it wouldn't work there. Got another under warranty. Installed and away we went. Can't blame this on Ford.

The Ranger had 40k on the odometer when I bought it in '06 from an old friend (he still is) who is almost as particular about taking care of his vehicles as I am and who has helped my out several time with this truck's problems. It now has 186k showing and as I said is a work/farm truck.

I had the intake plug problem at about 53K right after the tailgate latch broke for the third time. Been downhill ever since. While I had the started off I looked for the pcv valve/hose. Didn't find it.

Thanks again for the help. We're off and running again. At least for now. On the bright side, except for this starter problem the breakdowns are getting farther and farther apart. My friend I bought the truck from thinks it may be because I've replaced most of the failed parts with aftermarket parts instead of factory (LOL).

Again I apologize if I gave any offense. This truck has just been a bummer for me.

mine just did this, when the positive cable on the starter was tightened down it turned with the nut a little and was grounding on the negative wire. check the wire clearances and then clean/scrape the positive battery terminal, it heats up from the short and cakes itself so connection is lost. my ranger has been down 3 days figuring this out, hope it helps
