Hi all,

I have a question about the GEM on a 2001 Ranger 4x4 4.0. My 4x4 stopped working and I was told it was the Shift Control Module but when I went to replace it mine does not have one. (ugh) No light on "key on" so no power to switch, I've checked fuses already so I am fairly confident it is the GEM, now on to my question. Does it have to be the exact one? Mine is 1L5T-14B205-AF can it be replaced with say 1L5T-14B205-DE or others with different last letters? If in fact it can would those need to be programmed for my VIN? If I can find the exact one will it still need to be reprogrammed to my VIN?

One more thing, can the GEM be reprogrammed before it is installed or does it need to be done while in the vehicle?

Thank you for any help.

You need the exact one. If you can find one you may get away without programming it, but no guarantees. Ford generally only supports in-vehicle programming.
