Hello All,

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask but I just replaced my bearing/hub assembly and the manual says to use a new spindle/axle nut. It seems to be in good condition so I'm wondering if there's something I'm missing? Do these need to be replaced with a new part or are they supposed to have a lock washer to make sure they don't come loose from vibrations?

Welcome to the site. I'm not exactly sure, but if the nuts have nylon locks on the top of the nut then they should be replaced.

This is just a reference...

I think the reason they say to replace them is because they come with thread lock on them. Once removed the thread lock is gone.

Axle nuts do not make use of *lock washers*, they make use of a thrust washer behind the nut that is keyed to the spindle shaft. The nut will be a dimpled lock nut or sometimes referred to as a stover lock nut

on 2001+ live front hubs the nut has a crimp on the outer edge that causes a tight friction fit when it's most of the way on.
if I have to reuse a nut I smack it hard to renew the crimp.
check the torque specs, it's a hellofa lot.

Thanks. That makes sense. I've never come across a thrust washer before. Ordered a new one form Ebay

Gotcha. I have new one coming next week. Thanks!
