I have a 2001 ford ranger 4.0l 4x4 ext cab. For over 6 months now it has been starting poor "winding over for about 5-10 seconds before starting" when it does start it smokes out of the exhaust "mostly white/grey smoke" for several seconds and smells really rich then it finds it own and starts to run smooth. The truck has a new fuel pump, fuel filter, new plugs & wires. It has been on several computers and they cannot diagnose the problem.

The check engine light is NOT on, however, the gas cap light is.

Thanks,

Darcy

Start with the obvious...

Fuel pump was replaced... Gas cap light is on... I assume gas cap IS on...

Money down whoever replaced the pump didn't seal it correctly and you are having fuel pressure issues.

also pull the dipstick and make sure there it doesnt look like chocolate milk in there

blown HG's aren't super common on the 4.0's, and chances are the truck wouldn't figure itself out after a few moments if it had a compression leak that bad.

White would imply coolant (but it could also just be cool outside)
Grey would imply fuel/rich, which would make sense for a fuel pump/pressure issue, or a sensor/parameter issue (but those would normally throw a CEL)

Was the gas cap light on before the fuel pump install?

How did the sparkplugs look? Also the poor starting is both when sitting overnight and after it's been running then turned off and started again? I'm thinking a leaking fuel injector. But that is a guess.
