I have a 2000 4X4 3.0 Flex V6 and my speedometer does not work. When not running, it reads 35 mph. when driving it reads 50mph no matter the actual speed. I have replaced the sensor on the rear differential but did not do anything. I am thinking that it is the 4WABS module under the hood because all information reguarding speed goes through it.

the speedometer doesnt depends on the ABS module to function.

it sounds like your instrument cluster has gone belly up. its not too uncommon for them to fail (the new electric ones just dont seem as reliable as the old mechanical style).

The 4WABS module does control a 2000 4WD speedometer signal to the speedo/odo. Ford can reflash that module to compensate for larger tires.

First, check fuses 26 in the cab, and 3 and 7 under the hood. You'd have many issues if 26 were blown, though.

Might also clean out the connector under the DS of the cab, they get corroded pins from water intrusion, pack it with dielectric grease.

If you can wait until Tuesday, I can send you the schematics. Send me your e-mail address by PM (Private Message).

then i wonder how the speedometer in a RABS equipped truck manages to function.

the PCM is reflashed to correct for tire size changes, not the ABS module. this is something ive done first hand.

im gonna have to agree with wicked, my rear ABS sensor went out and my speedo sill worked, just had an ABS light on.
Beef

4wd 4wABS and 2wd RABS are completely different in 2000.

The EVTM has a schematic for each. I can't comment on the 99.

"You cannot correct the speedometer error by reflashing the 2000 PCM. That's because the PCM is not involved in the VSS correction before 2001.

In the case of 4WABS on a 2000 Ranger, the tire diameter correction and square wave generation is done in the 4WABS Module, not the PCM. The 2000 correction would have to be done by someone who has the special tool to access and change the module's configuration. This probably means a trip to a Ford dealer. Perhaps this change would also help the ABS situation but that's just speculation."

i work at a ford dealership. ive reflashed PCM's to correct speedometers for tire size changes.

Yeah, but not in the oddball case of 98-2000.

Please read:

The 1998-2000 Rangers are not equipped with a VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor). The PCM (Powertrain Control Module) receives vehicle speed information from the antilock brake system rear wheel speed sensor. The raw signal from the ABS/VSS sensor on the rear axle goes directly to the Explorer 4WABS module where the signal is corrected for tire diameter. Then the corrected signal is sent out on the gray/black to the PCM, speed control, cluster, etc. In this system, the PCM is an end user of the corrected VSS signal.

where is 4WABS module at under the hood

did not know where to find 4wabs. speedometer don;t work most of the time.
