I have a 2000 ranger xlt with the 3.0L V6 could anyone tell me what kind of front axle i have??? I'm looking to see if any heavy-duty or chromoly shafts are made i have broken 3 shafts now and only have 33in tires, eventually i want to move to 35s but i cant imagine how my stock axles are gonna hold up to those

It's a D35 and AFAIK there aren't any aftermarket shafts for it.

This is the 3rd time I have broken the passenger side shaft, Do you know of any ways to stop it from breaking. It breaks in the CV joint explodes every time.

What are you doing when they break? Turning sharp, suspension droop? Are your t-bars cranked?

Swap a Dana44 from an '80s Jeep Wagoneer under there.

Other than that, make sure that you're not over-extending the CV joint (possible since you say you're only breaking the one side). They are only so strong though, 33s is generally the limit for the IFS. I wouldn't be thinking about putting 35s on there.

I've wheeled the piss out of my D35 and havn't busted a shaft yet. With 35x15.5s and 33x12.5s.

I agree though, a waggy D44 swap is a good idea and could be done for the cost of a few more replacement shafts

ive ran 35s on my dana 35 with no problems. i yanked the hell out of a full size dodge in a mud pit. i was tacked out in 4 low and nothing popped.

if you can afford the dixonbros longtravel kit, you got it made. not sure if the shafts are chromoly but they are stout. they run 33s and 35s on that no problem.

you could have someone machine you a set of chromo shafts and use the vw aftermarket cv joints. also strong a stronger setup that the factory ones.

I was crossing a water hole and put it in 4 high and came out and heard metal on metal sound, got out and my cv boot was ripped and the joint had exploded. I do have my t-bars cranked, is that the problem?

How far are they cranked? That's a good place to look for the problem, if the cv is on too much of an angle it'll over-stress it....

Most likely it would be something like the shock is too long (allowing the A-arm to drop down too far), or maybe something in the suspension is bent (widening the distance between the differential housing and steering knuckle). Cranking the T-bars can increase the wear rate on the CVs however.

Is your axle locked?
