I have a 2000 Ranger 3.0L 6cyl 5 speed, 288,000 miles and been in shop once since I bought it in 2001 for a sensor. The transmission is going out. Unsure if I want to buy a new transmission or get one out of a damaged truck. My dilemma is I haven't been able to find a transmission for this specific year and engine size. I have called salvage yards, and none of them will give or sell me information on what other years and engine sizes have transmissions that will fit mine. They all say they have a transmission that will fit, but will not relay any other info except it is not the same year. I would prefer not to purchase from a salvage yard but find a truck that is wrecked and use it's transmission.

Can anyone tell me what other truck years and engine sizes will fit my ranger, or aim me in the right direction on purchasing a manual for the info I need.

Thanks in advance :)

The 3.0L has a unique bellhousing compared to other Rangers, but you should be able to pull one from 1991 on up, it doesn't need to be from the same year truck as yours.

Does it still need to be a 3.0L, someone has a 1998 2.9L 5 speed for sale, but when I contacted them they informed me that they did not think that the tranny would fit mine

They did not have a 98 2.9 5 speed for sale...Unless they did a very bass akwards swap.

2.9 wasn't made in 98 AND is from a different engine family.

Any 5 speed from a 3.0 (it HAS to be from a 3.0) Ranger will work. As Krugford said....It has a unique bolt pattern...as do all of the different families of engies used in the ranger...

THese families are:

1. Lima 2.x Four cylinder and possibly the Duratec 2.3...Nobody seems to know if all of the 4's share the same bolt pattern...?

2. Colongne 2.8/2.9/4.0 V6.

3. Vulcan 3.0

4. The Diesels (which I belive use a different transmission for each diesel engine).

Thanks, apparently the person with the truck for sale had no idea what the engine was, and since I'm learning, that makes me ad less informative as them.

Check out www.car-part.com

2wd and 4x4 transmissions are different. You will obviously need whatever you have.

As it has been said, you will need a tranny from a 3.0L truck. Any year starting with 1991 will work. Just look for a low miles transmission.
