i know the upper ball joints require the whole control arm replacement, but can the lowers be replaced with just the ball joint and not the whole control arm assembly? i bought just the lower ball joints from advance, so i assumed it would be possible, but the haynes manual says differently.
thanks

I did it on my 2wd i believe they have the same control arms....if it has a snapring on top of the ball joint just grab up a balljoint press and get to it they loan em at autozone and a big hammer and wrench

oh i forgot to mention its the torsion bar suspension, if that matters

naw...i know in the manual it says integral balljoints but if it has the snapring you are good

Fun times...

I didn't follow the book with the T-Bars. I simply canked them (loosening direction) till I got the droop height I was comfortable with, as shown. Have fun with the 32 mm axle nut (live, non-PVH), loosen those suckers while the tires are still on the ground.

No need to touch the torsion bars period....I don't know why people do. Support it by the lower control arms, remove the knuckle, replace the upper control arm and then press out and replace the lower ball joint.

The reason the manual says that is that is because that is the way that Ford origionally wanted them replaced. You can now just get the balljoint from ford and just replace it.

sweet. im lad to hear that. but im guessing the uppers still require the whole control arm replacement?
thanks

Yes. While you have them out, put in camber/caster eccentrics and have an alignment done afterward.

Driver's side requires complete replacement, on the passenger side you have to replace the outer part of the arm. I would also strongly recommend getting new bushings for the pass. side arm, they're only $10 a set and will match the new drivers side bushings, its always good to replace bushings on both sides at the same time.

If it has the 2 piece style arm on the passenger side.....you can replace it with the 1 piece arm of the later rangers.

what an eccentric lol? and is this requires to get a good front end alignment with these trucks?

The eccentrics are installed in the upper control arm bolts so you CAN align these trucks. The factory is just preset with a square shim.

ok. ya i went ahead n got em for both sides. drivers side is done, hopefully get the pass side done tommorrow.
thanks

Not a problem. Good luck!
