Howdy all..

I have a 2000 Ford Ranger with a 4.0 Automatic.

I can't get the 4x4 to engage.. It did engage but after about a mile it disengaged itself.. Then it will not go back in..

I tried it from a dead stop.. I tried High.. I tried low

Won't engage at all now..

Any ideas what this could be?

Thanks!

Sounds like it aint the motor but something else. Maybe a meltedvacuum line?

What is not engaging transfer case or front hubs

Do you know if it has hubs or a live axle? The way I figure out which vacuum lines on mine were not working was by pulling the air filter housing and right down by the frame there should be a vacuum port. one to each hub and one to the pump. I hooked up a vacuum gauge to each of the hubs tubes and pumped it up to 25 mmhg to see if the hubs were holding the vacuum and then the gauge hooked up to the pump to see what kind of vacuum it was pulling, which should vary from 19 - 21 mmhg and then 25 - 27 mmhg. Also note that the orings by the hubs tend to leak as well.

I am not sure if it is hubs or a live axle...

The other day I tried it again.. It seems that it goes in to low... but not into 4x4...

I slected 4x4 low and it reved way up when doing 20mph like it should but it didn't have 4 wheel drive.

Then I turned the nob to 2 wheel and it would not disengage.. . I had to keep turning on and off and backing up and forward... :icon_confused:

Does the front drive shaft turn when you engage 4wd?
No=transfer case problem.
Yes=vacuum hub problem.

If it has a large nut in the center of the lugnuts, it is live axle and has no front hubs (not PVH). If it has that, you have a transfer case problem.

To shift from 4Lo to 4Hi/2Hi you must stop, foot on brake, shift in N or P. Clutch in/stopped/brake on for a 5 speed. 2Hi to 4Hi and back, just flip the switch anytime.
