2000 ford ranger flareside stepside bed

I bought this 2000 ford ranger stepside bed and is in really good shape but the front of the bed that's in between the cab has the ends of the bedsides open. do they come that way? the bed looks original.
 
A picture would probably help us to visualize, but are you saying that you have the bed sides and no bed front? ie if I was to throw a 2x4 into the bed from the back it would bounce and hit the back of the cab, not the front of the bed?

If so, that is not normal, you are missing a fairly major structural piece of the bed...

Are you talking about between the bedside and the inner box, where it meets the cab? Then yes, there's a gap there. The bedside only bolts on at the top and under the step pad at the front.
 
Just looked at my 98, bed sides turn in about 1/2" & then there is nothing between it & steel inner bed. I actually never noticed it before. I really love the stepsides.. Hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine.
