long story.bought a 2000 ranger with a toasted 3liter,replacing it with a 98 non flex with 85 k,using the ff motors injectors and harness.ran fine for a year til a week ago when it developed a startup miss that cleared up in a minute or 2.no big thing.then i was cruising cross town when it started to run rough alnd lose power, barely crawling home.a new fuel filter made no difference so i put the fuel pressure gauge on it.55 psi.still running bad.i then noticed smoke near the alternatorwhich was a burned alternator hot lead.after repair it ran great til today when i got to walk home.same song minus the smoke.any ideas?

dont know about codes.havent had access to scanner yet.plugs and wires were replaced during swap.replaced all the normal maintenance items.funny thing is that during the 1st episode when i limped home it was like the throttle cable came unhooked.no amount of pedal made it accelerate except for about 3 seconds when it caught and took off, then layed back down again.

no codes, but can barely get it started and it runs liike hammered shit.what are the symptons of the various sensor failure?

I would unplug the MAF sensor and see if it starts OK

Have a read here:
http://oldfuelinjection.com/?p=1

Click on "Sensor (main page)" to see what various sensors do

sensors just report data to the PCM(computer), yes a failed sensor can cause an issue but usually it is just reporting an issue in what ever it is monitoring.

"Burned alternator hot lead"
Maybe over voltage spike damaged something
Have you check battery voltage, engine off and engine running

There is a Flex Fuel(FF) sensor on the fuel line, under the drivers seat I think, near the fuel filter.
It is an expensive sensor, like $650 expensive, lol, if you are using the FF computer I wonder if a fault in that sensor could give you issues.
Since you are using the FF injectors your vehicle is still FF, I know the heads were different but don't think that mattered, mostly the injectors, sensor and computer allowed the ethanol use.

You do know that in English you are supposed to put a space between a period the first word the the next sentence, right?

Not sure who this is aimed at but it isnt very helpful. ive never had to walk to work due to bad grammar but i,ll try to do begter. nope, truck didnt start. guess it isnt a sentence structuring issue.

well, after 3 days the truck started and ran again today. my mastertech pal cornholio is pretty sure th alternatorbis leaking ac voltage and causing problems in the electrical system so i going to trust his judgement and replace it.let yo knowbhow it works out.

Alt made no diff so i replaced the coilpackk and crank and cam sensor.no dice so i put the fuel pressure gauge on it and the pressure was all over thevplace and and the flow was bubbly.i took a new job and it was 2 miles to work so i dint put much gas in it at a time so it was constantly low in the tank.apparently it would suck air and fuel, just enough to keep running for a couple of miles but not enough to perform any useful work.funny thing is the gauge was well above empty.so a new pump and strainer set a little lower in the tank has gone in and seems to be working.
